The Ellmaualm is located on the sunny side of Ellmau and offers the viewer a unique mountain panorama. The ascent is somewhat steep, but the view is worth the effort of the climb. At the top, guests are treated to homemade delicacies and can also stay overnight at the hut if desired (up to about 15 people).

The Maurachalm is the northernmost managed alpine hut in the valley. It can be reached via the forest road from the Sonnegg Bridge (approx. 2 hours) and via the hiking trail from the Güterweg Geßlegg (approx. 1 hour). The easiest way, however, is to reach the hut from the mountain stations of the Alpendorf cable cars and the Grafenberg cable car in Wagrain (each approx. 1 hour). The dairy farmers spoil their guests with homemade delicacies and especially fine schnapps, such as elderberry and rowanberry. Singing and making music is also enjoyed.

A hiking destination for any weather is the Bachalm, which was newly built in 1992. The center of the hut is the open fireplace in the kitchen. The ascent takes place via the Bach service road. Driving is possible up to the barrier. From there, the route continues on the forest road past the Hasler Heimalm (not managed) through the high forest to the Bachalm, which also represents a popular destination for mountain bikers.

The Gewohlfhütte is a popular excursion destination for young and old and is located at the foot of the Kreuzkogel. The easiest way to reach the hut is from the mountain station of the Panoramabahn Großarltal (also open in summer!) downhill in about 1/2 hour or via the circular trail to the Kreuzkogel in about 1 hour. From the valley, there are 2 paths to the hut: either via the forest road from Unterberg Süd (Lagerhaus) in around 3 hours or via the forest path from Unterberg near the Hotel Johanneshof in about 2 1/2 hours. You can expect a wide range of dishes made in-house: hearty snacks, Kaiserschmarrn, soups, and various hot meals.

The Modereggalm is located at the entrance of the Hohe Tauern National Park and was newly built in the 1990s. After about a 2-hour ascent from the parking lot in Hüttschlag Stockham, you reach the cozy log cabin, which by the way also offers accommodation for up to 20 people.

The Paulhütte is located in a beautiful mountain basin and is easily accessible for hikers of all ages. The starting point of the hike is at the farm of Paulbauer or directly at the Mandldörfl goods road in the Bach district. Past several hunting lodges, the path leads after a short climb gently through the high forest. Shortly after crossing the Aigenalm stream, the path splits. Here, one must choose between the two huts of the Aigenalm valley. The path to the right leads directly to the Paulhütte, which is already clearly visible from this point. A special feature of the Paulhütte is its particularly extensive menu and the popular Kaiserschmarrn.

The Saukaralm, as the highest alpine pasture in the Großarl Valley, is rightly considered one of the most beautiful spots in the valley both in summer and winter, thanks to its location and unique views. With an unobstructed view to the south, north, and west, the sunset here is especially impressive. The hut can be reached from the center of Großarl via the trail to 'Herta's Rest,' from the Vorderstadlluck farm, or along the Labenbach/Höllingwald road.

The Bichlalm is one of the most popular alpine huts in the valley due to its beautiful sunny location and the wonderful panoramic view. There are two options for the hike up: If you prefer a more relaxed approach, take the weatherproof forest road that leads from the Ellmautal to the hut. Look for the 'Lammwirt' turnoff and then follow the signs; after about 2 km, there's a good parking spot before the barrier. If you don’t mind the incline and prefer a nice forest path, choose the 'Himmelsleiter' from the Finsterwald farm. Once you reach the hut, you can enjoy delicious products from the family’s own farm. Above the hut, there’s a memorial cross with a wonderfully carved figure of Christ—a sight that invites you to linger and reflect.

The Breitenebenalm is a popular hiking and excursion destination in any weather. You can reach it via the alpine path from the Breiteneben parking lot (about 45 minutes). Access for cars, taxis, and mountain bikers is possible via a private road up to the hut. There’s a nice sun terrace, playground, small animals, ponies, and a wildlife enclosure, as well as cozy spots like the 'Adlerhorst' with an open fireplace, 'Almstube' (museum), and Stüberl. Traditional dishes from the local cuisine, cake and strudel specialties. Celebrations and events in the evening are also possible with prior arrangement.

The Karseggalm in Großarl-Au is one of the oldest huts in the valley, being 350 - 400 years old. The easiest way to reach it is from the Breitenebenalm (about half an hour), from the Sonnegg bridge (1 1/2 hours), or via the circular route from the Unterwandalm over the Karseggalm to the Breitenebenalm. Especially impressive is the open fireplace, which is still in use daily. Among other things, the so-called “Knetkäse,” a Großarl specialty, is smoked here. Additionally, there is the opportunity once a week to watch the cheese being made (dates in the event calendar). At the Karseggalm, watching the open fire and experiencing the hard work of manual farming takes you back several decades. Other hiking destinations around the alm include the Kitzstein (“Gabel”), the Penkkopf, the Sonntagskogel, the aforementioned alpine huts, and the valley crossing to the Kleinarlhütte.

The Mooslehenalm was built in 1952, tastefully expanded in 2005, and offers a wonderful view of the town of Großarl. The hut can be reached in about a half-hour walk from the parking lot at the ORF broadcasting facility (near Holzlehen) via a wide forest road that is easy to walk on in any weather. The alm is especially popular with relaxed hikers. The hut is an ideal starting point for hikes to the surrounding alms, the Höllwand, and the Schuhflicker.

Especially for fans of folk music, the Unterwandalm is a popular excursion destination in any weather. The Gratz family takes care of not only your physical well-being but also provides good entertainment. You can reach the hut, built in 1710, via the forest path from the Sonnegg Bridge. The Viehhausalm is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful viewpoints, offering views of the town of Großarl and the snow-covered peaks of the Hohe Tauern. Singers and musicians from the valley often meet here. The Alm can be reached via the ascent from the Mooslehenalm. From there, you can follow the romantic trail (about 30 minutes) or, as a family hike, the well-maintained farm track (about 45 minutes). Large parking lot at the ORF transmitter. Overnight stay for up to 10 people available on request. Adventure playground.

The Igltalalm is located in one of the wildlife-richest side valleys of the Großarl Valley and is the starting point for hikes to the Höllwand (2,287 m, only with a local guide) and to the Heukareck (2,100 m) with a wonderful view over the Salzach Valley. You can reach the alm via two routes: a) Ascent through the high forest from the fork about 500 m past the Unterviehhaus inn, approx. 1 1/2 hours; b) from the ORF transmitter near the Holzlehenbauer via the track, about 1 hour. Also ideal for a round trip and in bad weather.

At the foot of the legendary Schuhflicker (2,214 m) lies the Aualm, one of the highest alpine huts in the valley. You can reach it via the Rattersberg/Pointgrün service road (about 1 1/2 hours on foot) and then continue on the road past the Heimalm to the Au-Hochalm (about 1 1/2 hours). While some very active hikers start directly from the village or the last farms, others enjoy the advantage of being able to drive up to the hut (the drive to Aualm is chargeable) and use it as a starting point for hikes to the Schuhflicker, the Schuhflicker Lake, and the Paar Lakes. Especially beautiful on days with lift operation is a ridge hike from the panorama plateau over the Kreuzkogel, Fulseck, and Arltörl to the Aualm. From here, you can either descend freshly energized into the valley or be picked up by a taxi.

A popular hiking destination for young and old is the Mandl Hut. Easily accessible, it lies beautifully nestled in the back of the Aigenalm valley and can be reached in about 1 1/4 hours of walking. At the fork between Paul Hut and Mandl Hut, the alpine pasture is still not visible. But the effort of the approximately 10-15 minute climb is rewarded with a hearty snack from their own farm.

The area of Tofern and Reitalm is part of the former copper mining regions of the Großarl Valley. The Harbachalm is the only existing and still operated miner's hut from the 17th century. Today, it is a popular hiking destination in any weather. The ascent first goes via the Hinterfeld service road (Hüttschlag, just before the tunnel on the right) and finally via the forest road, which is also popular with cyclists.

The Reitalm was rebuilt in 2001. Children will find a small playground and numerous petting animals here. The climb is along a forest road, which, after a longer stretch through the high forest, finally opens up a view of the wide valley basin of the Reitalm. It can also be reached by taxi and is a popular destination for mountain bikers.

The Bichl Hut is the upper of the two Kreealms. From the Stockham parking lot, you hike up south of the waterfall on a natural, narrow alpine and forest path. The alpine area is located in the Hohe Tauern National Park and is one of the most wildlife- and plant-rich side valleys of the Großarl Valley. The dairy farmers spoil hungry hikers with delicious snacks, shredded pancakes, dumplings, and soups from their own farm.

Past the Kreealm waterfall, the path leads to the two Kreealms. The Kreehütte, the lower of the two huts, offers overnight accommodation for up to 25 people and can be reached in about 1 1/2 hours of steep ascent from the Stockham parking lot. Just before the hut, you come to a small chapel that invites you to pause. From here, the trail is flat all the way to the hut. There, a delicious snack with products from our own farm awaits. In addition, there is a barbecue area for groups at the hut.

The Glettnalm is a popular hiking destination for both young and old and a real insider tip, not just among the locals. It can be reached from the Hallmoosalm in about a 2-hour walk. Most of the path to Glettnalm goes along a forest road through a spruce high forest. Those who prefer a traditional alpine trail can take the old alpine path via Ragglalm, which eventually meets up with the forest road again. After that, it’s a flat walk into the wide cirque of Glettnalm, with the hut located in the middle. Just before the hut, a wayside cross invites you to pause. Here, everyone will probably stop for a moment to enjoy this unique idyll. Hikers are rewarded with a hearty snack made from homemade alpine products.

The Steinmann Hut, which is seen on the left from below, is run by the alpine farmers Kathi and Sepp (both have been on the alpine pasture for over 40 years) along with their dog Aika. All the milk is processed into butter and sour cheese (silver medal winner at the KÄSIADE 2000) in a copper kettle. It's also cozy on the beautiful terrace or around the large table in the parlor, where you can refresh yourself with a break and a snack and gather energy for further hiking destinations. Overnight stays are possible.

It is located in the back of the Ellmautal and can be easily reached from "Grund" via a leisurely alpine path in about 1 1/4 hours. Thanks to the new path, it is also a popular hiking destination even in bad weather. The centuries-old Weißalm was carefully restored between 1998 and 2001 and is a popular hiking destination in any weather. At the original open fireplace, sauerkäse is still made today just as it was generations ago. Alongside this, sausage, bacon, Bündner meat, bread, various schnapps, and much more are produced directly on the farm or on the alpine pasture. The Weißalm is particularly known for its stunning views, as well as the cozy interior and the hut’s equipment with old tools, which remind visitors of long-gone days and the hard work in the mountains. For tired hikers, anyone who has lost track of time during a sociable afternoon at the hut, or simply anyone wanting to spend a night away from stress and hustle and bustle in the solitude of the Alps, the hut offers plenty of space to stay overnight. The easiest way to reach the Alm is by ascending from 'Grund.' It also serves as an ideal starting point for the surrounding hiking destinations.

The newly built Gerstreitalm is located on the 'Ellmau sunny side' and offers a wonderful view of the valley. It’s a popular hiking destination in any weather. Young and old can easily reach the Alm from the Vorderstadluck farm via the Alm path or through the Rosenstein access road and then along the Scheiblbrand forest road (passing the Heugathalm, about 1 hour) through dense forest and partly across lush alpine meadows to the Alm. There’s a driveable route up to the barrier. In bad weather, hikers gather in the cozy lounge. There, the dairy women serve guests exclusively products from the farm’s own production.

You can reach it via the forest road that branches off from the Labenbach service road just before the Sonnegg Bridge, or via the hiking trail from the Breitenebenalm, which eventually also connects to the forest road. An easily accessible hiking destination in any weather is the Muggenfeldalm. You can reach it via the forest road either from the Sonnegg bridge, the Geßlegg country road, or from the alpine village in St. Johann/Pg. The hut was rebuilt in 1947 and is already considered one of the 'modern' huts of the valley. In addition to a cozy room with a tiled stove, it offers sleeping space for about 8 people and treats hikers with homemade snacks and especially good schnapps. From there, you can often see the playful marmots, which get attention with their loud whistling.
