Großarltal - the valley of the pastures

"Valley of the Alms" — this revealing nickname is owed by the Großarltal to the large number of managed alpine huts in the region.

Alpine farming has always had tradition and an enormously high significance in this valley, which today lives primarily from tourism and agriculture. While the high pastures were almost exclusively considered "summer quarters" for the animals in the past, to collect supplies on the fields in the valley for the long and usually harsh winters, today the alpine farmers are increasingly important in their role as landscape caretakers.

Furthermore, the alpine pastures provide farmers with an excellent opportunity for direct marketing of their farm products and also delight hikers on their journeys through the untouched mountain world of the Großarl Valley as welcome rest stops. On around 40managed alpine pastures, hikers and bikers can enjoy this very special "hospitality close to heaven".
